If you do not have a lot of space available to plant your garden, you can determine the size of your garden by measuring the space you have available. You will have to determine what you can plant according to what can fit within that space.

If you have more room available, the size of your garden should be tailored to the needs of the plants you want to grow. Make a list of your plants as well as how much space each plant will consume when fully grown.

Determining the size of your garden is now a simple mathematics problem. The space a plant needs at full growth multiplied by the number of plants you will grow delivers the amount of space needed for that plant. Add the required space for all plants together to determine the final size of your garden.

If you are planting a flower garden, consider the colors of each plant that you want to grow and when each plant will produce flowers. If you are planting a vegetable garden, consider how many plants you need of each variety to meet your needs. For instance, you may need more plants if you want to can food for later months or share with neighbors.

Gardening can be a healthy hobby that furnishes exercise and good food. People considering starting a garden often debate how large a space they need. Planning a garden space requires considering several issues.

Available Space

Obviously, the garden cannot be bigger than the yard of the property owner. The planned garden must allow space for other uses such as children’s play and backyard entertaining. Try to size the garden to complement the other uses of the yard rather than overwhelm the backyard space.Get more information here. < a href=’http://thesurvivalplaceblog.com/2013/03/04/9-things-to-consider-before-you-ever-grow-a-survival-garden/’>http://thesurvivalplaceblog.com/2013/03/04/9-things-to-consider-before-you-ever-grow-a-survival-garden/

Planned Garden Plants

Different types of garden crops have different space requirements. A simple salad garden with lettuce, a few tomato plants, peppers and cucumbers may require little space. Growing vine crops such as muskmelon or watermelon requires larger spaces. A full, general purpose garden might require a considerable space if the owner intends to feed a large family and maybe provide excess to neighbors or friends. Draw out a plan of what will be included in the garden and size the garden space appropriately.

Time Commitment

Big gardens require big time commitments. If work and family commitments limit the amount of time in the garden a smaller garden may be advisable. A small salad garden requires little time, compared to a large garden space, and can still provide treats for the table on an almost daily basis.

Deciding on the type of tomato you choose to buy from the market or grocery store could sometimes be a difficult decision. In going through the produce section, many people did’nt know that there is a wide variety of tomatoes to choose from. Furthermore, each specific variety of tomato has a unique texture, taste, and color. In making this choice, people should first decide on how they will prepare the tomato to eaten. For example, will you use the tomato in the raw form and toss it in a salad; or, will it be combined with some eggs in a yummy Chinese stir-fry? Below is a list of the most common of tomatoes found in most supermarkets; along with a brief description of their appearance, taste, and ways many use to cook them. The tomatoes on this list are organized from smallest in diameter to the largest.

Cherry Tomato:
-appearance: These tomatoes are very small in size, about double the size of a regular cherry and are round shape. They are available in shades of red, yellow, or orange
-taste: mild to slightly tart
-preparation: serve unsliced, raw as a snack, alongside a choice of dips, or in a salad

Green Tomato:
-taste: if eaten raw, very bitter and acidic; if eaten cooked, mild and lightly tart
-preparation: can be sliced, chopped, or crushed; it can complement many dishes after its boiled or roasted

Roman Tomato:
-appearance: These tomatoes have the width of diameter of a small kiwi fruit. Usually, Roman tomatoes are found in only shades of red.
-taste: tart to sweet
-preparation: great for salads, pasta sauces, or served with cheese
Campari Tomato:
-appearance: This is the typical tomato, either it is attached to a vine and sold in a bunch or three to four, or its seamless and sold individually. Its texture could be very firm if not overripe, elsewhere and it’s very soft and delicate. These tomatoes are usually found in shades of red, green if not ripened.
-taste: acidic to sweet
-preparation: very versatile; it could be deep fried, sliced and served with vegetables, gutted and filled with tuna or chicken salad, it goes well with most fish or meats, poaching them to be served in soups is also possible.

Having a backyard garden is a growing trend. Gardening enthusiasts have been doing it for years. The economy along with recent illnesses connected to produce has turned many people to backyard gardening. Gardens can be vegetable, flower or a combination of both. Planting vegetables and flowers together can create a natural herbicide.

Having vegetables and flowers in the same garden can be beneficial to both. Planting dill and chives for example will attract beneficial insects to control plant-eating pests. Planting garlic is said to help keep marauding squirrels out of the garden. Planting legumes such as peas and lentils will aid the soil for flowering plants and other herbs and vegetables. Legumes will draw nitrogen from the air and through its root system deposit it into the soil. Nitrogen is critical for proper plant development.

Gardeners can never have enough bees. Planting flowering plants in the vegetable garden will attract bees for pollination. Tomatoes are an excellent choice for any garden they grow well in a variety of soils. Melons require a sandy and loosely packed soil that drains well. Melons because of their size and vines require plenty of space. Cucumbers grow well and add colorful flowers to any garden. Cucumbers require a lot of water and proper cultivation. Cucumbers can be controlled by training them to grow up a trellis for space-limited gardens.

Depending on the type of garden you are planning on growing, and where you plan to grow this garden, the addition of a weed pad may be needed, in order to prevent weeds from ever growing, and in order to minimize the growth if they ever do start to grow into your garden. Weed pads are a great tool to use in your garden, but they can be a bit unattractive, which is why many gardeners decide not to put them in. If you do not put it in, your garden might become infested with weeds, and the only solution will be for you to get out there everyday, and pull the weeds yourself.Didn’t catch that? This explains it.

But, if you put in a weed pad, it will eliminate this problem, require much less work from your, and if weeds ever do grow in, it will be in minimal amounts, requiring very little work from you. So, rather than have to deal with the problem of weeds growing in your garden, instead, consider the addition of a weed pad, to eliminate the problem from ever starting up. This will give you a great looking garden, and much less manual work on the part of the owner.

Any gardener knows that pesky bugs can be their number one foe. There are, however, some remedies that can help you keep those pests at bay. Slugs and snails can be beat by creating a protective copper barrier around your precious plants, pots and trees if wrapped around them. You can also bait them by using fresh grapefruit, melon rinds, empty milk cartons or flowerpots. An effective homemade remedy against Japanese beetles is made by blending larkspur or delphinium leaves, adding water and then spraying the mixture onto your plants. Another amazing homemade remedy is red pepper powder. You mix six drops of liquid soap in a gallon of water and add 2 tablespoons of red pepper powder. This mixture can be applied using a spray bottle, shaken well, on the tops and bottoms of leaves to protect plants, especially members of the cabbage family. One of the most effective treatments is an herbal brew. You take potent scented herbs such as rosemary, basil and mint and crush them slightly before putting them into a large glass jar filled with water. Wait overnight for this herbal tea to steep, then strain and add 1/8 teaspoon of liquid before putting into a spray bottle. All of these tips are easy ways you can fight those pesky insects that threaten your thriving garden.

If you’re looking to become a home gardener there’s no easier way than if you work from homehere are some tips.
Work in the morning: It’s easiest to work outside or with your plants in the mornings, before it becomes too hot. Do all your watering and adjusting and make sure your plants are arranged so they’ll get the most sun they can during the day.
Water in spurts: Plants love rain sprinkles more than they like an occasional deluge so water twice a day to keep them extra happy. If you can, give them half their water in the morning and half when you close down your day.
Don’t overdo it: The danger of at-home gardening is being TOO hands on with your plants – just because you get to enjoy them all day long doesn’t mean they need your touch every hour. Let them do their thing and only handle when necessary.

Depending on the type of plants being grown certain soil additives may be important to allow for a thriving plant growth. Most people know of the many advantages of plant food. These extra nutrients can be an excellent way to supplement soil nutrients that may be missing or depleted from the garden.

Additionally soil types are important when considering additives. Sometimes though potting soil may seem like just the right mix, depending on the base soil type it can be a deterrent to plant growth.Check out this link here. The best way to check this is to have the soil composite area tested. Certainly compost and manure can be great additions for soils as well, but again it is advisable to know the soil type already in place so oversaturation of nutrients does not occur.

Generally speaking compost is a great way to naturally fill a garden area with nutrients and plant food is a great way to sustain nutrients during plant growth. However understanding the richness of a soil before planting is important to ensure a proper balance. Testing for PH balance can be done by purchasing test kits online or at a home improvement store. Consult your local garden center for advice on what type of soil is best for what you are planting then once the garden site soil is tested, proper additives can be mixed in for greater gardening results.

Many gardeners feel that the soil is secondary to plant care and maintenance. The thinking is, as long as the plants are getting quality food, sufficient water and enough sun, they should do just fine. This is the same thinking as, “why buy organic when a mass produced vegetable will do the trick?”

The type of soil your plants grow from can make the difference between producing average plants and stunning plants. If you want an outstanding garden, you need to grow your plants in a quality medium. Once you know how to pick great soil, or produce your own, your garden plants will thrive and grow to twice their normal size.

Good garden soil is the right mixture of sand, silt and clay. Too much of one ingredient can compromise the quality of your plants. There should be an equal amount of sand and silt and smaller amount of clay. A Google search for “good garden soil” should produce more information about the exact methods for testing the quality of your soil. Composting is another excellent way to create a great foundation for your garden. A home composting bin is an effective, free method to make your own quality soil.

When preparing the ground for a garden it is a good idea to get the soil tested for ph levels. Depending on the type of garden different plants flourish in different soil types. Some soils are more acidic than others so it is important to find out what the soil type is in the area that is the planned garden location.

For vegetable gardens, PH can be very important. However, sunlight and PH is not the only issue to be concerned with for a thriving vegetable garden. You can find a quick rundown here The soil type is also important as well. Certain soils have more clay deposits and make for poor gardening due to a lack of water absorption levels. When this is the case, it is advisable to relocate the gardening area to more suitable soil. A well draining soil is best so that when it rains water does not pool around plants and drown them.

Flower gardens on the other hand or simple ground cover gardens can survive in rocky and clay filled soils a little easier, but most plants have a difficult time in this type of soil. In these cases it is advisable to dilute the clay significantly with more well balanced soil types for proper plant growth.
